CHOLESTEROL NF
CHOLESTEROL in
the free and combined state is the most widely occurring
sterol in animal tissue. It is an essential compound in the
body’s production of steroid hormones and bile. It is also an
important component for normal skin function. Commercially,
CHOLESTEROL is derived from woolgrease by fractionation,
extraction and purification.
The
compound is insoluble in water, but is soluble in most organic
solvents including oils.

A 95% minimum purity
cholesterol conforming to The National Formulary (NF)
monograph specification. The product is a white crystalline
powder.
In nature, cholesterol allows the
organism’s lipids to absorb water. Pharmaceutically,
CHOLESTEROL NF is used as a water-in-oil emulsifier. It
is also used to incorporate active compounds into ointments
and creams; as well as to stabilize liposomes. CHOLESTEROL
NF also acts as a secondary oil-in-water emulsifier.
CHOLESTEROL NF functions as a skin moisturizer.
CHOLESTEROL NF
is suitable for use in topical formulations.
It is available in
22 and 110 lb. containers. Mixed tocopherol is added as an
antioxidant. Cool, dry conditions are recommended for
storage.
